As my hobby has grown, naturally so has our garden space. My corrugated metal raised bed journey started when purchasing a 3x7’ bed on amazon. One bed turned into two beds and two beds turned into seven beds. We were paying about $165 for a 4x7’ raised bed and about $150 for a 3x7’ raised bed. All together we spent a whopping $1,080 for all these beds through purchasing on amazon. OMG! I have never sat down and done the math. Yikes, that literally hurt my heart typing that out thinking of all the money we could have saved. Anyways, back to the story….it gets better…

It took us (quite) awhile to realize that with Joey’s ability to build things, why the heck were we spending so much on purchasing them! It was then my handsome hunk decided he would figure out how to build us our own and sure enough after doing the math for supplies it was definitely MUCH cheaper! He was able to build us a 3x24’ raised bed spending about $120 and a 2x16’ raised bed for about $90. Woo Hoo! All said and done both beds cost us $210 and gave us ample amount of space.

Navigating an unleveled backyard can be tricky.

Navigating an unleveled backyard can be tricky.

Our biggest challenge was dealing with a gnarly slope in our backyard where where we wanted to place the additional 2 beds. We knew building level raised beds was not going to work, so how the heck where we going to deal with this slant in a frugal way.

After brainstorming ideas, Joey came up with the idea of using rebar to stake the panels in the ground and then in addition, screw the panels together for added stability. This would leave the bottom open and the backside of the raised bed would essentially be our concrete fence wall. I was definitely skeptical at first but trust Joey, so a 3 sided raised bed it was. HAHA!

Time for Soil

After building the beds and testing our water sprinklers, it was time to add some soil and plants. BUT before doing that we added a layer of cardboard and soaked it with water to act as a barrier to weeds. You can also use a weed cloth.

Where there is a will, there is a way. This was a tricky place to place a garden bed but we made it happen. Not it is time to grow some veggies. Let’s Grow!
