Gutter Garden

These gutter gardens were a DIY, we did about 4 years ago. They are still in great shape and have fed us lots of fresh organic greens. We use them every spring, fall, and summer to plant our lettuce, spinach, arugula, and strawberries! To make 2 gutter gardens it cost us just under $30.

I love the idea of a sustainable garden. The fact that these garden gutters are smaller means less dirt is required and less dirt means no weeds! Hanging each gutter at a slight angle and staggering them, conserves water. The plants absorb what water they need and the rest of the water rolls through the gutter and drops down into the next gutter. Cool huh?

Step 1: Cut gutters in half with metal sheers.

Step 2: Drill one hole at each end for drainage.

Step 3: Hang gutters slightly angled and staggered with brackets (2 per/gutter)

Step 4: Put end caps on.

Step 5: Mix soil, peat moss (to retain moisture), and fertilizer (kelp meal) and then add to gutters.

Step 6: Sprinkle seeds on top and water. The water will push the seed into the soil to appropriate depth.

Step 7: Enjoy the fruits of your labor! Cut greens at the base and they will re-grow.
